Review of Art School Confidential (2006) by Farrah W — 03 Feb 2008
Art School Confidential, starring Max Minghella, Sophia Myles, John Malkovich, Jim Broadbent, Steve Buscemi and Anjelica Huston, is, at first glance, a satire of the art world, specifically art school.
Not being an artist, but a fan of art, probably saw it more of a reality than a satire. Max Minghella is mildly interesting as an art school virgin struggling with his art and his women. Sophia Myles was vapid.
The normally "can't go wrong" John Malkovich and Steve Buscemi, went wrong. They were just plain flat. Anjelica Huston was unnecessary. The plot, if you can call it one, followed every artist stereotype as they struggled through their first year at art school.
Every single idiom ever spoken on art was on display in this picture. The ending was predictable and the picture moved on the screen like a constipated turtle. The characters and scenes are barely held together with dental floss and the laughs were few and far between.
If you happen upon it and get stuck watching it , it is not going to kill you, but you will be disappointed if you expect the film to paint a masterpiece for you.
