A good film which doesn't live up to Clowes and Zwigoff's earlier efforts (Ghost World is one of my favorite films) but has a good look at the reasons people go to art college. The truth is you can learn a lot about yourself at art college, but you cannot learn to be an artist at art college - or anywhere else for that matter.
Why Clowes felt that a trite and cliché serial-killer sub-plot was necessary is beyond me. This worked fine as a coming of age film. The murders were simply a distraction.
