Review of Art School Confidential (2006) by Iara Z — 29 Nov 2008
While the film walks a close line toward being an entertaining satire of what I assume to be life at Pratt Institute of the Arts, (notice the decaying neighborhood and White castle burgers a la Brooklyn Pratt) it makes the huge mistake of trying to make a statement- a mistake made by many art school students, no doubt.
What results is a disappointing cross between "Revenge of the Nerds" (artsy-fartsy edition) and "The United States of Leland". It's hard to believe the main character's descent into artistic desperation when everything going on around him is hyperbolically silly or melodramatically morbid.
Basically, for a comedy, it takes itself too seriously. Again, not unlike going to art school.
