Review of Art School Confidential (2006) by Jacy O — 23 Dec 2008
I don't know who is meant to be this movie's audience. It's plotted much like a "college freshman" sex comedy, but it's about art school kids. So I don't see the art-minded characters appealing all that much to the teen sex romp crowd.
On the other hand, I don't see art school kids who might identify with the characters having all that much patience for the teen sex romp plot points. I didn't really sympathize with the protagonist as it seemed like his romantic tendencies were poorly-conceived and directly clashed with his artistic aspirations.
Much of the comedy comes from taking the piss out of art school "types", but honestly how hard is that? Then you've got the almost-mystery of the Strangler mucking up the tone even MORE.
This thing was all over the map, tone-wise. I don't know who the hell was supposed to enjoy it. Certainly not me. HUGE disappointment considering how much I enjoyed Ghost World.
