Review of Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) by Stephen E — 26 Oct 2012
"Arsenic and Old Lace" seems made for cult audiences. It's a real nuthouse of a film with a dark, bizarre sense of humor, idiosyncratic characters and an overdone, incredibly hammy performance from Cary Grant.
Among the film's best characters are Peter Lorre as the alcoholic plastic surgeon and John Alexander as the loon who thinks he's Theodore Roosevelt. (His "Chaaaaaaarge!" bits are the best parts of the film.
) "Arsenic and Old Lace" is likable, harmless, funny stuff, and it's great how lightheartedly Frank Capra handles his dark script.
