Review of Arrival (2016) by Kyle S — 11 Mar 2017
This is one of those reare beasts: a 'thinky' science-fiction film!
Essentailly a story about First COntact (no, not the Star Trek type!), this puit me more in mind of the (now) old Jody Foster flick 'Contact', with perhaps a dash of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' thrown in.
The film follows Amy Adams linguist Dr Louise Banks, who is chosen alongside another group of scientists (including Jeremy Renner's Ian Donnelly) to make first contact when the aliens finally arrive, touching down in the boulder shaped craft aroudn the world and then proceeding to, well, not do much at all.
As Star Trek's Dr McCoy is famous for saying: "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it ...": a quote which could very easily apply to this: after all, manking ofthen has trouble enough communicationg amongst themselves, so how are we going to communicate with creature(s) that we have no shared basis for understanding ... ?
(and who, it transpires, see's time differently than we do).
