Review of Arrival (2016) by Lance C — 17 Mar 2017
"Arrival" has some really, really lazy film storytelling, but it masks it well by being very smart. The laziness comes in the fact that the movie never explains why the aliens need to do what they did so they are saved in the future.
Ignoring this important fact so you can just show a movie about whether or not knowing the future will stop how you live is weak storytelling. If that is your theme, it should permeate your film, not just be a quick wrap up at the end to get some awards and pat yourself on the back for deep thinking.
Sicario was much, much better. However, it had some great acting, and a fascinating plot (until the end) and good sound.
