Review of Arrival (2016) by Jared B — 29 Jul 2017
Science fiction has gotten a slight bit stale and predictable as of late, and even though it's my favorite genre it's hard to stomach movies that use sci-fi as a means to go full ham on spectacle.
That stuff is enjoyable, but it lacks impact. Arrival is one film that really bucks that trend, plays with your expectations, and ultimately is an incredible story told in a very unconventional way. There's a terrific story to be told with a strong central theme at its core, but I won't go near any explanations for fear of spoiling the ingenious twist.
Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner both have fantastic performances throughout, and really offer a terrific look at the characters and how they develop throughout the course of the film. A chilling, ethereal soundtrack accompanies the whole film and an excellent audio mix bring the contemplative movie to life.
Arrival is clever science fiction that is insanely engrossing from start to finish.
