Dealing with heady ideas on an intimate scale, Dennis Villenueve's Arrival is an emotionally rewarding, intelligent, beautifully acted and gripping sci-fi film that isn't afraid to dispose of the generic conventions of a modern blockbuster in favour of a more slow-burning, cerebral take on the arrival of aliens.
