Review of Arrival (2016) by Tom B — 15 Feb 2017
**Spoiler Alert*.
If you watched this hoping for AN ACTUAL SCI-FI MOVIE you'll be sorely disappointed. If you were hoping for a tragic love story then you've come to the right place. The aliens that JUST HAPPEN to be in this movie are only a means to an end. The alien/sci-fi aspect of this movie serves no other purpose whatsoever than as a catalyst to one random person's love life. A love life BTW that didn't even have a happy ending as they separated and the child died! So aliens come to the earth and all they do is give one person the ability to see the future, and all the impact it has on humanity is their love life? I was wondering why the movie came out on Valentine's Day and now I know. I'm sorry but when aliens come to earth I expect them to have a grander impact on humanity than this movie portrays. This might be a decent movie if it wasn't trying to pretend it was a full fledged sc-fi epic. It's more of a scirom (sci-fi/romance) or scidra (sci-fi/drama), both of which would be a new genre. I don't know if I'm missing the whole point to this movie or what but I'm having a hard time understanding how any sci-fi fan could like it.
