Review of Arrival (2016) by Jon T — 23 Oct 2017
For all the alleged philosophical underpinnings this is a pretty conventional movie. It's not too much of a spoiler to say that physically unbecoming aliens mean us no harm after all and luckily there is an American (woman- this is the twenty first century) to save us from ourselves by bypassing authority and doing the unorthodox.
Another sign of the times: the Chinese are our friends despite some initial misunderstandings. It's not a bad film but in trying to make a popcorn movie with a PhD it rather falls between the two.
