Review of Arrival (2016) by Ross B — 27 Jul 2017
The past few years have saw multiple massive sci-fi films released, such as Gravity and Interstellar. When I first heard about Arrival, I expected it to have the same impact on me as the other two had; intriguing, but I didn't think too much about them afterwards.
Luckily, I was wrong about that, as Arrival proved to be one of the most fascinating, thought-provoking films of 2016. Amy Adams (Batman vs. Superman) had a fantastic year in movies (even after the film that I just linked her with), and she owns the screen in this movie.
The story, when several massive monolith-style ships arrive (surprise) on Earth and humans attempt to both communicate with the creatures inside and work together as a unified planet, keeps you guessing at every turn.
The imagery and cinematography is stunning and keeps your eyes glued to the screen by its sheer spectacle. This extremely smart movie will keep you on your toes and will have you thinking about it well after it is over.
