Review of Arrival (2016) by Dennis L — 30 May 2017
Not much plot and logic. Aliens just coming to earth to teach their language? People panicking when the aliens haven't done anything? Country on earth cutting communication when facing non-earth force?
And as a film touching on linguistics, the producer didn't even bother to use proper foreign language. There are grammatical errors in the Chinese news screens, and I couldn't understand anything louise said when she tried to 'change the mind' of the admiral, except for the word 'admiral'. And they didn't bother to put up a subtitle for what she said. They just pictured her changing the mind of admiral with some Chinese that's unintelligible to a native Chinese. Well.
Also, the whole seeing the number of the admiral and knowing what she said to change the mind of the admiral just feels too much like a deus ex machina.
