Review of ARQ (2016) by Andrew H — 21 Sep 2016
This is actually a really good time loop movie. It is definitely an indie type, and low budget movie, but it works. As it only takes within a single old abandoned warehouse building, it kind plays like a stage play, and could easily be adapted for it. I am definitely a sucker for time travel movies, and I have done some studies in the theoretical philosophy and physics of time so I may be a bit biased. Even so, I have seen many really bad time travel movies, but this is still among the better one. Acting is more than ok, and it does introduce a few new elements into the time loop scenario. A major difference is that every time look is not identical and the characters, besides the protagonist, do not all behave the same in every loop, as in contrast to Source Code or Live Die Repeat, and there is some memory between the loops. Essentially space-time is treated as 5 dimensional although this is never really discussed. These twists and the gradual change of the time loops drives the story which ups the pace for each loop.
An interesting note is that ARQ is an IT term for Automatic Repeat reqQuest, which is actually happens here in terms of time loops.
Good work.
