Review of Army of Darkness (1992) by Joe W — 07 Sep 2012
It's not the best of the trilogy but it's just a fun comedy adventure. There's not much horror in this. It's the most well made of the three, there aren't any film crew or wires visible, but Army of Darkness is far from perfect.
The other characters are very cardboard, have no personalty and are just there for Ash to be around with. The love story between Ash and Shelia comes right out of no-where and the scene where everybody agrees to help Ash is just........ I dunno. I didn't feel anything in that scene.
The dialogue is still awful; "Gimmie some sugar, baby." although, maybe the bad dialogue was intentional.
Ash's personality is different. He's more sarcastic and more ruder. Completely the opposite of the first two films. Yes, like the 2nd film, this film acts like the last one never happened. Mainly cos Sam Raimi couldn't get the rights to use the footage from the 2nd film.
Ever since this film, Bruce has been typecast as the same character in every thing he's done. Much like the way Mark Hamill was typecast as Luke Skywalker.
The special effects are good, nice stop motion skeletons and KNB's make up effects. The action sequences are done well, Raimi was just starting to do action. Without this movie, the battle sequences in The Two Towers wouldn't have been made.
Overall, "Army" is fun, brainless comedy flick.
