Review of Armageddon (1998) by Zanele J — 30 Dec 2012

In 18 days planet Earth will be no more, unless NASA hatches an idea that will successfully remove an asteroid the size of the state of Texas on a collision course with Earth.
A group of experienced albeit maverick drillers, specialising mostly with oil are recruited to drill on the surface of the asteroid, plant a nuke and remote detonate. Easier said than done.
The drillers fail all NASA tests, A.J. the youngest driller who was fired from the drilling firm, is recruited and his arrogance also makes the drillers fail a simulation tests, They cannot concentrate at training, they get a weekend off before launching into space and they manage to break the law and wind up in prison. This guys are good at nothing but failure, but they are mankind's last hope for survival.
Watch the movie to see how they pull this off.
This is a fantastic disaster movie, where racial and gender biases blur and people unite to fight a common enemy. The science in the movie is heavily flawed, but this is a blockbuster and never cares about being politically correct and it's main concerns with thrills which it delivers quiet rapidly.
Highly recommended.
