A giant asteroid is hurtling towards Earth and the only men who can stop it are a group of earthy oil riggers. I loved this movie when I was twelve, but a more recent viewing of Armageddon found me stupefied at the choppy editing, self-indulgent running time, casual racism, hammy acting, cliched plot points, awful sound editing, schmaltzy music, and a story that's both condescending and willfully stupid.

Bashing Michael Bay is a popular activity within the cinephile community, but I can't stop myself from wondering at how one director can offend my movie-loving sensibilities on so many levels at once.

Some have argued that Michael Bay will eventually attain recognition as a great artist in the same way that Alfred Hitchcock did in the later segment of his career. Many populist entertainers did eventually find such vindication after years of being dismissed by snobbish critics, but I suspect (and hope) that Michael Bay's schlock will never find such revisionist acclaim.
