Review of Armageddon (1998) by Ps H — 25 Nov 2012
Disappointing, mostly due to Michael Bay's insanely over-the-top direction. Particularly, during the action scenes where there are far too many explosions, screams and American flags to focus on.
The story is as dumb as it gets: Billy Bob Thornton owns NASA and with an impending meteorite about to smash Earth back to the dark ages NASA can't nuke it because it will only burn some geeks fingers. Cue Bruce Willis hitting golf balls at Greenpeace because he's cool. Bruce is better at drilling than anyone else on the planet and if he has to drill into the meteor to blow it up, he can only do it with his gang of dudes, including Ben Affleck who's shagging his daughter.
Training begins to send this mob into space and there's many references to better films.
A few cities are destroyed, including Paris *\o/*.
Bruce, Ben and co then go into space, some people go nuts and shit gets blown up. Yeah!! Go America!!
Deep Impact, released the same year, is a slight improvement on a similar plot.
