Review of Armageddon (1998) by Dann M — 25 Feb 2013
Michael Bay delivers a wildly entertaining thrill ride in the high-octane adventure film Armageddon. A group of oil drillers are asked to save the world from a global extinction event when a comet is headed directly for Earth.
Despite the silliness of the plot, J.J. Abrams is able to craft an excellent script that's fast paced and full of fun characters. Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, and Liv Tyler form an all-star cast that really work well together and are able to bring a lot of personality to their characters.
And Bay's directing is exceptional; full of high-energy action sequences and iconic imagery that enhance the drama. Additionally, Trevor Rabin's score is outstanding, capturing all of the bombastic and epic tones that the film is going for.
Armageddon is everything that an over-the-top action film should be and more.
