Review of Armadillo (2010) by Erno K — 07 May 2011
It is always interesting to watch documentaries about real war situations. It's not quite the same that in movies.
It is hard to realize what a chunk of rock Afghanistan really is until you see the soldiers patrolling the countryside there. What a shit hole. Why would even the Taliban want to protect that sandlot? Oh yeah, the heroin (World's leading producer by far, yay!).
This rather intimate documentary follows young Danish soldiers on their first assignment to Afghanistan. I gotta tell you, every time I watch a war documentary, the same thing happens. Some sort of blood lust takes over the soldiers, and they just want to kill something. When they eventually do, day couldn't be happier about it. This really worries me.
The engagements in real life are hectic and unorganized, again not at all like in the movies. It's remarkable there isn't more casualties. I think this film could have been much better, as it could be saying more, but even as it is, it's pretty interesting to see what these guys are thinking. Probably "why the fuck did I fly into this ass crack of a country to eat sand and mortar cows?".
