Review of Arlington Road (1999) by Jeff H — 22 Apr 2008
A solid thriller which just survives Mark Pellington's ham-fisted direction, thanks to some moments of genuine creepiness, an "oh fuck" ending, and a terrific premise: Jeff Bridges's university terrorism expert begins to suspect that his neighbour, Tim Robbins, is up to no good.
Under the thrills lies an interesting subtext about American terrorist groups and the media and society's need to pin atrocities on a lone scapegoat. About as bleak as Hollywood gets.
