Review of Arena (2011) by Grant S — 12 Jul 2012
Weak, but not absolutely atrocious. Plot was derivative of other kidnapped-to-fight movies (eg The Running Man), but reasonably interesting nevertheless.
Direction and editing are mostly poor. Fight scenes are well done, but remainder is woeful. I suspect that most of the budget for the movie was spent on Samuel L Jackson's salary. For example, clearly they could not even afford to hire a text writer who knows how to spell "Cape Town" correctly.
Samuel L Jackson plays his usual cocky, wise-cracking bombastic role, and does it well. Remaining performances are so-so. Kellan Lutz, playing the hero of the story, should stick to fighting and forget acting.
