Review of Are You Scared (2006) by Emily N — 26 Feb 2007
Are You Scared is a complete Saw rip-off that went direct to DVD. Now imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and with the booming success of Saw, it was bound to happen, but Are You Scared fails to capitalize on what made Saw so powerful: strong characters.
What we get is a game set-up to test you against your worst fears. Survive the test and get set free with fabulous prizes, otherwise, game over, you're dead.
Are You Scared places 6 "contestants" in an abandoned factory dealing with their phobias such as germs, and darkness. The story really had no purpose other than to link characters to their inevitable deaths, and the lame twist that you could see coming from a mile away.
In terms of gore, the kills are uninspired, low budget, and boring. The only exception is the drill scene (pictured on the DVD cover) which manages to be a lot less tense than it should have been, but a decent kill nonetheless.
The only time that Are You Scared applies to this movie is when somebody asks you if you want to watch it. Admit you're scared, tuck in your tail and run because this movie is so terrible it's horrifying.
