Review of Arbitrage (2012) by Jessica T — 26 Dec 2012
Steely manoeuvring through financial scandal. A morally-compromised man is made pitiable by Richard Gere's deft performance. Robert Miller (Gere) seems trapped in a world of privilege and money by his own hand.
On the surface he can confidently manipulate his way out of serious repercussions, but his internal complexities are what make him relatable. His actions are self-justified by means of providing for his family and employees, except even he doesn't seem to buy it.
"Arbitrage" quietly questions what part of a person has to be sacrificed for them to have everything they want or to maintain an image, and whether that sacrifice is worth it.
