Review of Arachnophobia (1990) by Allan C — 11 Aug 2013
A horror film for the whole family. This was actually Disney's first film released under their new company, Hollywood Pictures, which was to release more adult of films. Executive Produced by Steven Spielberg and made by many of his regular behind the scenes staff, it has the same kinds of funhouse thrills as the also Spielberg produced "The Goonies.
" Jeff Daniels is the new doctor in town with a paralyzing fear of spiders. Can you guess what fear he has to face by the end of the film when the town becomes infested with a rare and deadly species of spider? The town is also populated with a colorful cast of characters including John Goodman as the town exterminator.
Re-watching this film now really made me think how good an actor Jeff Daniels is and what a shame it is that he hasn't become a bigger star. At least he now has a juicy role in the new HBO series "The Newsroom.
" But back to this film, it's really an old fashioned 50s monster movie at heart, along the lines of "Them" or "The Blob," and manages to successfully be funny, scary, charming and suspenseful all at the same time.
It's a fun film if you're in the right mood.
