Review of Aquaman (2018) by Scott H — 03 Jan 2019
You have to go out on a limb to enjoy superhero movies, but this was one just kept pushing me out there until there was no limb left. The cast did what they were supposed to do and did a decent job with what they had and the basic storyline wasn't bad, but the direction, effects and some casting choices in the movie fell far short of expectation.
Was everything supposed to be funny? The opening scenes with the Younger-via-cgi Nicole Kidman immediately reminded me of the last DC screw up, Superman's upper lip. My wife and daughter could not contain the all out laughter when Orm and Aquaman, flying underwater in jets, side-glanced menacingly at each other.
Scene after scene defied any kind of logic, ignored all laws of physics and tried really hard to be funny/campy/impressive/fun. It was mildly entertaining, but not for the reasons the film makers intended.
