Review of Aquaman (2018) by Jonah H — 31 Dec 2018
I went into this film with strikingly low expectations. After Justice league's failure to entertain, I didn't expect much.
I was mistaken. This the best movie DC has ever made (potentially tied with Wonder Woman, but surpasses WW in many areas).
The visuals are absolutely stunning at times and the creature design is derivative enough to be familiar but unique enough to be memorable.
The Villains all have legitimate and comprehensible reasons for what they're trying to do, which is a nice contrast against the "evil to be evil" trope perpetuated in many recent movies (IE, Justice league, Wonder Woman, The Last Jedi. Etc.). All the Villains were also competent, which is another thing that many recent films have forsaken. This alone can make a movie go from 'ok' to 'excellent'.
The problems are with the spoken dialogue, but I've never cared much about weird dialogue as long as it fits the scene.
The story is fairly simple and straightforward, but it didn't hinder the movie at all. I went with two people and both of them liked it more than Wonder Woman. One of them wouldn't stop talking about how much they loved it.
Overall, a good movie that probably could've been great with tiny changes. I liked it very much.
