Review of Aquaman (2018) by Adrian B — 31 Dec 2018
I was not expecting much when I paid to see this, and thus, was not disappointed when I was met with the same storyline that almost all of the super hero movies have nowadays. However, the visual effects were by far the best components throughout the film. The action and world-building scenes that were aesthetically pleasing were often done over cliche or overdone fighting scenes.
Jason Momoa played the stereotypical dumb jock, while Amber Heard played an over-sexualized sidekick. While watching this movie, I could not get over the fact that she was wearing a very obvious wig, and had perfect make-up after every under-water/fighting scene. I understand that this movie is a block-buster film meant to entertain and please the audience, so Heard and Momoa had to be eye-candy characters, who go on a typical quest to save the world, but, personally, I was underwhelmed. James Wan, the director of Aquaman, did not add anything that made this movie stand out from other super hero films. It was the same story with different characters and a different setting. I know that all movies are essentially the same, telling the story in a different perspective. But that's the thing--this story is not a revision of another story with a different perspective, it's in fact, a retelling of the same plot line. Every story is a revision but, Aquaman does not qualify as one because it does not contribute anything to the super hero genre. At the end of the day, however, an overwhelming amount of people loved it, and were entertained, which is the main goal of the movie industry: to entertain, in order to make money.
