Review of Aquaman (2018) by Hirai M — 23 Dec 2018
HOLY SHIT!!!!! Did DC just reinvent themselves?
Aquamanï¿ 1/2(TM)s big screen solo debut is a visually stunning triumph. James Wan did a phenomenal job establishing the world of Atlantis and itï¿ 1/2(TM)s history as well as Aquamans. The film is a fast paced roller coaster from beginning to end. The narrative isnï¿ 1/2(TM)t as bad as everyone is making it out to seem. Aquaman excels in where the rest of the DCEU has suffered, and thatï¿ 1/2(TM)s character development. Aquaman became a character audiences could relate to and cheer for in its 2hr+ run time.
Jason Mamoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman was amazing and Mamoa showed much more emotion and range then he did in Justice League. Amber Heards performance as Princess Mera was amazing as well and her chemistry with Mamoa really helped lift this movie.
Another area DC always seems to get right is in its action set pieces. Aquaman is no different as where Batman V Superman has the Batman warehouse scene, every action scene in Aquaman felt like that, brutal and amazing. James Wan brought a new life to a character most of DCs hardcore fans never thought theyï¿ 1/2(TM)d see on the big screen, while his Justice League outing was a bit of flop.
Wan resurrects a new breath of Hope and a shining bright light into the DCEU and proved that DC doesnï¿ 1/2(TM)t have to be dark to be good and new.
Given Aquamans amazing visuals, amazingly choreographed action scenes and itï¿ 1/2(TM)s great narrative Aquaman is another win for the DCEU. There is hope of DC movies Warner Bros just has to let the directors and writers do what they are paying them to do.
Aquaman is gonna get my second 10/10 for DC. This movie was perfect all around. Highly recommend it. DC takes one step forward, which just means Shazam could be the second foot through the door of an amazing universe that deserves its time in the cinematic spotlight!
