Review of Aquaman (2018) by Chris K — 27 Dec 2018
One of the most pointless collection of images and noise I've ever experienced. Wan is a strong director and does his thing here. Momoa and Heard have chemistry and actually most of the cast is pretty good with the caveat they're all acting like over-stylized cartoon characters to keep pace with the oversaturated sensory demands.
The ingredients are all here for something entertaining but for some reason to me it lacked a sense of tension or meaningful storytelling. When the most frequent line is someone yelling "arrgh" in frustration or vengeful glee and there is an electrically-charged octopus playing tribal bongos it's a unique recipe for a viewer that is apparently not me.
This is all a subjective take, of course, but it boils down that Aquaman the movie is not like Venom in the sense that it is bad and kitschy enough to be kinda good. It lies somewhere in between. It has its moments.
