Review of Aquaman (2018) by Zippy M — 27 Dec 2018
Definitely not a timeless theatrical masterpiece, but for a Hollywood blockbuster CGI film, it's a lot of fun to watch. You have to enjoy it for what it is. The CGI effects are amazing. It really gives you a sense of awe.
They fell into all the traps that ruined the other DC movies, but somehow this works. What I mean specifically is that this is 8 movies in one. There is a lot going on and it's very ADHD. One second this movie is Star Wars, then its Raiders of the Lost Ark, then it's Blade Runner, then it Jurassic Park, then it's a love story, an action story. It just keeps changing but somehow this works. See this for the special effects! I love that they don't shy away from being a Comic Book movie. Ocean Master and Black Manta's Costume are comic book perfect. I think these movies really work when they embrace what it really is.
There are some bad things about this. Amber Heard may be the worst actress I have ever seen. In her scenes with Jason Mamoa, she brings his performance down. Dolph Lundgren was in this movie and his performance was oscar worthy compared to her. I'm not sure how she landed this role. Jason Mamoa and her had 0 chemistry.
I would just go in expecting some stunning CGI work, maybe the best to date! Don't expect a thought provoking introspective masterpiece, this isn't it. It's definitely fun, Jason Mamoa is a great action star!
