Review of Aquaman (2018) by Ethan L — 22 Dec 2018
So many things wrong with this movie. The CGI battle scenes were just chaotic and confusing. I closed my eyes through most of them so as not to get a headache. The motivation of the Atlantians to wage war on the Surface people because they pollute their world is weak since 1) they never communicate this to the Surface people, and 2) there is a scene where we see how much power these Atlantians have when they throw warships and garbage back onto shore.
How the Atlantians can speak underwater makes no sense, no is it ever explained. So the Atlantians are basically Superman underwater. Surface metal, bullets, knives, spears will not penetrate their skin, but if it's Atlantian metal then it will, like Superman and kryptonite sort of.
They fly through the water like Superman flies through the air, but this isn't explained, just assumed we get it. The logic of how some Atlantians can breath both water and air wasn't adequately explained.
I get that Aquaman should be able since he's a hybrid or half breed as he's called in the movie, but for others? The scene where we see Nicole Kidman towards the end and she's wearing a mask.
There is no reason for her to wear that except to created tension and surprise when she removes it. Her costume in that scene is really ridiculous. This movie ripped off The Fifth Element, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Captain America Winter Soldier, Tomb Raider, and probably some others.
It's making a lot of money, but is such a problematic movie. The script, cgi, and overall story details making no sense are 1-2 stars. I feel asleep off and on throughout the movie. The guy who was after revenge, his suit was just ridiculous.
If we get into the racial dynamics of this movie, Atlantians (good) are white, the pirates (evil) are black. The pirates kill innocent people and of course therefore deserve to die. The Pirates weren't even really necessary and seemed like an afterthought.
There is Randall Park as the token Asian playing a scientist that no one believes. The "Ocean Master" term seems as goofy as when Ironfist says, "I am the immortal Ironfist," people just start laughing.
.. The weapons that somehow convert water into a deadly blast of energy, really? We are just supposed to believe that? Besides Wonder Woman, and that Batman with Heath Ledger's Joker, all DC movies are 1-2 stars and this is no exception.
