Review of Aquaman (2018) by Collin C — 22 Dec 2018
I caught the 12:45 pm showing in 2D IMAX @ the AMC Newpark Mall in Newark, CA. The auditorium was jam packed and the HD Surround Sound was ear shattering. Now going into this movie, I read several non spoiler reviews, and the biggest gripes that some people stated was that it was a CGI Fest, the story wasn't consistent, the jokes fell flat, it was too campy, and way too long.
To that I say this: total B.S.! Starting off, the visual effects were absolutely superb. Yes, it was CGI heavy but hey, what do you expect!? How else can you make this movie? Actually film it underwater? Anyways the casting was on point, I must say; Jason Momoa IS Aquaman! He completely embodies the role! Nicole Kidman as his mother Atlanna and her relationship with Arthur's father is the heart of this story.
The supporting cast Amber Heard as Princess Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, and Patrick Wilson as Aquaman's half-brother Orm did a tremendous job. Yahya Abdul Mateen II portrayed Arthur's nemesis Black Manta in a minor but very important role.
Overall, director James Wan delivered a tremendous comic book film that can be enjoyed with the entire family. The fighting and battle sequences are some of the best I've ever seen on the big screen.
Don't miss this film, and definitely see it in IMAX if at all possible! 8.5/10.0 Highly recommend.
