Review of Apt Pupil (1998) by Frank J — 02 Dec 2006
Chilling psychological drama. Bryan Singer is a really crafty director I have to tip my hat to him for this accomplishment. Everything fell right into place. The puzzle pieces were perfectly aligned. The movie carries on for a bit as it progresses but never too much to make it a boring picture.
The usage of lighting was the films highlight. Close-ups of Ian McKellen in the shadows or of Brad Renfro be it of that matter as he descends into the dark world of McKellen's character. The movie doesn't start off at a slow pace either.
It takes you right where you want to go meaning that Renfro and McKellen encounter eachother right at the beginning, whether than other thrillers that take their time to unfold. I've seen too many of those right up to this point in my life, way too many, and it was nice to see a thriller that carried a strong spicy appeal condensed right at its core.
