Review of Appleseed: Ex Machina (2007) by Dan S — 27 May 2008
Eh, Typical Anime storyline...pseudo-ghost in the shell type shit, just not very well done. The action was well choreographed and very john woo (complete with doves), but, apparently all these reviewers that say amazing CG haven't watched a CG movie since 2000, because that was about the level of quality this shit was at. They didn't even use bumpmaps, and I don't care if its "anime" or not, lackluster cg is what it is. The quality is about that of Final Fantasy 8's cut scenes with slightly better lighting (in fact the hitomi character is a near direct copy of Rinoa Heartilly from the FF8 game), if you want to see good anime CG check out the cut scenes from final fantasy XII (which came out before this film did) or the Final Fantasy VII movie.
A typical anime, it wasn't horrible, I got into the action, but it is nothing I will remember.
Oh and I saw the HD blu-ray version, which I will say added nothing to the quality.
