Review of Appleseed: Ex Machina (2007) by Steve C — 18 Sep 2008
Really great film. Visually, the aesthetic is closer to cel shaded 2d anime than the ultra realism of Final Fantasy Advent Children but it keeps as real as possible and delivers an awesome scale and vison. There are similarities with the real world in the storyline- especially the US plans for the Star Wars satellite programme and the continuing intrusion of technology in to our lives. However, it's not an attack, rather an examination. With Lots of brilliant set piece action scenes :P.
If you're a fan of GITS or even Full Metal Alchemist then you'll enjoy this especially. The same studio created another visually stunning cg-anime recently with Vexille so it's obviously one to watch.
Also, producer John Woo should take credit for an ingenious spin on his dove motif near the end.
