Review of Appaloosa (2008) by April M — 21 Aug 2009
A well made, rather gentle Westerner with the focus very much on character and relationships rather than guns and action - there are two shoot outs, both of which occur very quickly, a fact commented on by those involved ("It's because everyone knew how to shoot" Harris' wryly comments).
As a film, it rather reflects Harris the actor - a strong performer, always reliable but not the star. THe limelight is taken by Mortensen, possibly one of the most interesting actors currently working and vast emerging as a natural heir to De Niro. His performance here as a man both worldly wise but also wilfully childlike and innocent is exceptional. Zellweger seems an odd choice as the femme fatal as is Irons as the villain although both deliver capable performances.
Enjoyable, rather like a gentle Sunday afternoon viewing. It will never let you down but neither will it seize you by the balls.
