Review of Appaloosa (2008) by Charley D — 28 Feb 2012
A well-executed film which owes considerable credence to the recent takes on the genre, such as HBO's Tombstone, Eastwood's Unforgiven and the recent remake of 3:10 to Yuma.
Harris is an excellent study of the genre and the film also shares elements with such classics as the Searchers, High Noon and Shane.
Zellwgger's character (more so than her performance, necessarily) leaves you somewhat wanting for something other than a female role which seems to establish that if there are only 3 women in your 3 horse town, in order to be with one, you're gonna have to put up with a lot of crap.
Viggo Mortenson performance as well as Harris' direction superbly play up the minimalist- to the point of being surreal- desolation of the Old West.
