Review of Apostle (2018) by Tony1984 — 30 Apr 2020
A couple of biggish names in this tosh of a movie. Obviously written by committee. You can spot that quite early on. POC extras in 1905 Scotland????. Why bother? Authenticity gone never to return. We then get a mishmash of cliches, from sexual free-spirited daughter of a jealous father to glamourous independent other daughter who manages to look like a supermodel in an uber grubby location. But no explanation as to why the followers are there? Their motivation? Nothing.
The only real positive thing is that it’s atmospheric. That's about it on the plus side. The dialogue I mostly ignored and it didn't matter. A turgid slog from beginning to end with gore. I’ll be slow to watch Dan Stevens or Martin Sheen in anything for a long long while after this bad and I mean very bad Wicker Man wannabe.
