Review of Apollo 18 (2011) by Tom R — 24 Feb 2012
(1 Star) Probably the best thing Apollo 18 has going for it is that it feels authentic. It was shot on what looks like 1970's cameras and the scenes on the moon look real. The rest of this film is a huge snoozer.
You can pop this movie in the DVD player and the ambiance of the film will whisk you to sleep; I'm not joking, I battled falling asleep while watching it, even during "tense" scenes. The problem is that there is no dread to be had.
The three American astronauts in the film have the same personality and I didn't know anything about them. When you think it could be different than most found footage movies due to its authenticity, there's a character who says "we have to document this" even in a bad situation.
Also, they add musical crescendo to jump scares... which isn't authentic at all. The film moves slower than actually walking on the moon. The payoff isn't good and neither is the ending. You can skip Apollo 18; just watch the footage of the moon landing instead.
