Review of Apollo 13 (1995) by Martin R — 02 May 2015
5/3/15: This movie really deserves a full review but I'll just try to get off what I need to. Firstly, I bought this movie yesterday (new) for $4 on DVD and I've never seen it before. Secondly, my review shall begin after this sentence.
Let me just start off with the audio because it is REALLY sharp and loud for a non Blu-Ray format movie, in particular, the music. James Horner's 5-star score couldn't have sounded better; it packs so much in emotion, tension, and restrained patriotism.
The movie could be described in the same way, and when I say tense, I mean, tense. The first hour went by so fast that I had to check my phone to make sure I was looking at the right time. This is a "based on a true story" film where we know that it all ends well, yet, the way "Apollo 13" is written/directed/etc--it's hard to describe, but the movie feels like Paxton, Hanks, & Bacon might not make it .
..even though we KNOW they do. Across the board, the movie is well done: the dialogue is there, the visuals are there, and the acting's there. You couldn't ask for a better film; the ending is so triumphant (again, James Horner's music BOOSTS that scene so much) that even 2013's "Gravity" seems to have missed the mark by comparison.
