Review of Apollo 13 (1995) by Nate W — 02 Oct 2010
Based on the nonfiction by retired astronaut and Apollo 13 survivor Jim Lovell, Ron Howard's "Apollo 13" is a darn entertaining movie, even if its 1990s prestige picture packaging has dated it somewhat.
Howard's knowledge of cinematic technique is what helps the film to blast off. Smart editing and sound mixing allows us to essentially listen in on all of the conversations and interactions between the many characters in play, from the endangered spacemen aboard the dying Aquarius spacecraft to their worried families on the ground to the dozens of mission control personnel (headed by an ever-determined Ed Harris) who worked around the clock for seven days to bring their boys back to earth.
Simply put, "Apollo 13" is a really good story, really well told with the best of Hollywood expertise.
