Review of Apocalypto (2006) by Michael V — 06 Dec 2011
This is a great combination of a historical epic story and hard as nails action. Just like his previous films Mel Gibson shows just how brutal, violent, and primal human's can be. But it also shows just how beautiful and strong we can be at the same time.
The images in this film are breathtaking, shot with the genesis digital cameras this is the best looking digital film for it's time, the cinematography is superb, the costumes, make up and art direction are top notch.
The art design, as usual with a Gibson film, is among the best I have ever seen. Everything seems worn, real, and not like it came out of a costume factory. The sets and costumes were very exotic and amazing to view.
Just the amount of detail put into everything is amazing. Pieces of jade in the teeth, the eccentric hair, and the jewelry. The plot wasn't very complicated. The prophecy scene with the little girl tied the whole film together by adding a sense of mysticism.
I also enjoyed the brief scenes with the Mayan general and his son, it added a whole new layer to the antagonists, something we rarely see these days. The acting is a real surprise since Gibson casted actors with no experience at all, yet they are convincing.
The little girl was found living in a village much like the one you see in the first act.
