Review of Apocalypto (2006) by Hari A — 23 Jul 2012
The exotic rituals that are aired on discovery and national geographic comes to life in the neanderthal epic by Mel Gibson, and it definitely is not as gung ho as its history channel counterpart. Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) leads a normal tribal life with his men and women, when suddenly his village is attacked by Mayan soldiers, and taken back to the kingdom for sacrificing to the Gods. When Jaguar Paw escapes and kills the general's son, it leads to a hunter/hunted game in the jungle. Jaguar Paw's jungle.
Very gritty, graphic and raw, this is a movie not for the weak hearted. Mel Gibson tries to emulate working and living conditions in the Mayan Kingdon at that time, I do not know if it is historically correct but it definitely is blood curdling. I personally felt, some parts of the movie were shot in a documentorial fashion, which provides it with a reality feel. If you are man enough for the gore, go for it and you will not be dissapointed.
