Review of Apocalypto (2006) by Lee E — 29 Mar 2014
The anthropology may be a bit dodgy (did the Maya practise large-scale human sacrifice like the Aztecs?) and the theology un-PC (Christianity, which offers a perfect and final sacrifice, is shown as a "better" religion than the indigenous practices portrayed) but the re-creation of ancient Central America in the hours before contact with Europeans is astonishing, driven along by a fast-moving plot (literally).
The final scenes, where the hero stumbles into his culture's fatal future as conquistadors land on the beach, is unexpected and moving.
