Review of Apocalypse Now (1979) by Sam H — 20 Jun 2012
An acid trip into the middle of Vietnam turns into a vision of hell on earth. Surrealist visions stand side by side with the brutally visceral horrors of war. Like Dante's Inferno we travel deeper and deeper into the inner circles of hell until we encounter the face of evil (Kurtz).
What we eventually realise however is that we are actually viewing a mirror that reflects our own darkness back onto our image. No other film is able to shake an individual to the core as ruthlessly as this one as, like all great art it manages to achieve the hallowed goal of forcing the viewer to question their most deeply held values.
