Review of Apocalypse Now (1979) by Aditya S — 16 Feb 2013
Arguably Coppola's greatest film, Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece with surreal overtones and filled with many excellent, memorable scenes- chief among them the air strike carried out to Wagner's 'Ride of the Valkyries' and the incredible ending.
The performances are uniformly first-class, especially Duvall, Hopper and Brando, the last of whom is magnetic and impossibly charismatic in his role as Col. Kurtz. In displaying the mesmerising madness of his character, Kurtz's dialogue is simultaneously meaningful and meaningless.
Throughout the film, Sheen's narration enhances the atmosphere. The use of music is stunning- particularly that of The Doors at the beginning and the end. Overall, it is a brilliant, insightful commentary on the effect of war on man.
