A more haunting and visionary adaptation of Joseph Conrad's masterpiece could never be achieved. All aspects of the filmmaking from Walter Murch's arresting sound design to the bleak cinematography and fittingly dark performances by Robert Duvall and Marlon Brando put Apocalypse Now in the upper pantheon of war cinema and a great example of the artistic power of film.
It's a bit long and mentally taxing (as is "Heart of Darkness"), so don't approach it expecting to be entertained.
