While I could certainly appreciate this film for a masterpiece, made with all the love and attention a film needs (and that is a credit to Francis Ford Coppola, considering the production issues this film had), but despite all the right parts, I just felt my attention slipping at various points in this film. I'm unsure whether that was just me or the film itself causing that, but I can only review my own experience.

The acting was superb. You expect that from the likes of Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall, but Martin Sheen really shone in his role, and the small roles played by the likes of Laurence Fishburne, Harrison Ford and Dennis Hopper, among others, were used extremely well.

The soundtrack as well was supremely memorable. Obviously the use of "Rise of the Valkyries" has become iconic throughout music history, and I'll never listen to the Doors song "The End" in quite the same way again (no mean feat for a song that makes use of the Freudian idea of killing your father and making love to your mother).

It had all the right parts, and there's no denying it's a bloody good film, but it's also an effort to watch.
