Review of Apache (1954) by Allan C — 30 Dec 2012
I dislike racism, so I didn't particularly like the limited views of indians westerns often hand to the viewer, but the movie was entertaining at least for the first half.
The movie seemed longer than it really was, I don't know why. The acting was fine, but it looked a bit silly seeing Burt Lancaster and the beautiful Jean Peters tanned to look like American native indians. It didn't work too well.. I also found it denigrating to put the real american indians to stand at the background and jump up scared at the sound of the train whistle like scared animals (very uncharacteristic to the warriors the Apache were told to be). It was also odd how Massai was first a bad male schauvinist macho, but suddenly becomes a caring individual. Somehow, I didn't quite believe the scope of the change in Massai's character.
This was a refreshingly open minded western, touching on the subject of the American Indians plight, but yet, not that I'm an expert on the subject, gives a rather limited view of it.
